Ports of Memory: Tracing Bordeaux’s Global Legacy

October 23 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Free
Facade, Musée d'Aquitaine, Bordeaux, France

Join us for a captivating private tour of the Musée d’Aquitaine, led by a knowledgeable historian, followed by an elegant lunch on the Garonne River. Housed in the former University of Bordeaux’s arts and humanities building, this iconic museum takes you through centuries of regional history—from prehistoric artifacts to the legacies of figures like Eleanor of Aquitaine, the Black Prince, and Michel de Montaigne. As one of France’s largest historical museums, it offers a rich and immersive experience of the cultural and political evolution of Bordeaux and the Aquitaine region.

We’ll feature a visit to the second floor, a powerful and thought-provoking journey into Bordeaux’s transformation from the 18th century to modern times. These galleries delve into the city’s complex past, highlighting its pivotal role in Atlantic trade and the transatlantic slave trade, as well as its emergence as a global port. With multilingual exhibits and compelling storytelling, this floor offers rare insights into how history has shaped Bordeaux’s identity today. Come discover the stories that have defined this remarkable city.

Your museum ticket is valid all day—after lunch, return to explore the temporary exhibit “Le monde d’après, 1944–1954. Des lendemains qui chantent ?” Created in partnership with Sud Ouest, it offers a vivid look at life in Bordeaux during the pivotal post-war reconstruction years.
